Granville Residence
This landscape project provides entertainment and utility for a single-family residence
with a new pool and contemporary outdoor lounge. As the homeowner’s kids turned into teenagers, the project’s motivations were to evolve the home’s backyard into a more enjoyable and functional setting for hosting and gathering adults. Privacy improvements were also critical design considerations for this busy urban setting where Vancouver’s Shaughnessy neighbourhood meets the West Side.
Location Vancouver, BC
Type Residential
Size 5,000 sq ft
Seating for everyone
Significant concrete and deck work create separate seating areas and frame views toward the pool while hiding the pool pump house and utility building. Formal lines create strong linear pathways and connect to the site’s surroundings. By contrast, soft landscape and native plantings help integrate the new spaces with the lower-level yard areas.
Precision meets style
The project’s detail shows best in the concrete work. Paper-face concrete architectural forms were methodically planned and staged in multiple pours to create a uniform final look. This work required intensive forming set-ups measured to the 1/16th of an inch. In the finished result, these walls and terraced benches meet weathered cedar decks accented with bamboo planting, corten metal, and stylish seating elements.
