Eppich House

The Eppich House, originally designed by the architectural icon Arthur Erickson, is often recognized as one of the most important examples of Modern West Coast architecture. Renovating these interiors was a demanding and rewarding experience we will remember for many years.

Preserving West Coast architecture

Our six-month project covered about one-third of the 3,800 sq ft interiors, which formed phase one of the design work led by Battersby + Howatt. The project’s aim was to seamlessly upgrade and modernize the residence without detracting from its architectural brilliance
or losing any of the iconic modernism qualities. Accordingly, we meticulously matched the installation of new millwork, stainless steel railings, and custom carpentry to existing ‘70s finishes.

Modern upgrades

In the modernist style, the original design purposely omitted staircase balustrades and railings. Needing to update this in compliance with present-day building codes, the designers invented an architectural responsive steel aircraft cable solution to provide safety. To achieve this in construction, we embedded steel links in the ceilings and slabs to hang the wires from floor to roof. Thanks in part to these efforts, the renovations became a widely shared success story in the design community.
